South African Chefs Association (SACA) supports Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk’s call to grow the domestic tourism market.
Van Schalkwyk, who was speaking at the opening of a cableway at Hartebeespoort in the North West yesterday, said that domestic tourism contributed more than 70% of SA’s total tourism last year, giving the economy a R20bn boost. He emphasised that the government must “protect and grow” the domestic market.
SACA President Stephen Billingham cited the National Department of Tourism (NDT) support of the National Youth Chefs Training Programme as a prime example of putting policy into action.
“We are very encouraged by the funding of the second phase of this exciting project. Over 1600 young unemployed youths are being trained in professional cookery skills in this project managed by SACA,” said Billingham.
The investment by NDT is a major step forward in professionalising the labour force available to the hospitality industry.
