Nobu, One&Only, Cape Town
Kerzner International’s latest resort venture, One&Only, in Cape Town, brings two international big names to the South African restaurant scene: Nobu and Gordon Ramsay – an African first for both. At outset, both promise a fresh perspective and elevated standards of culinary and service excellence – a case of substance keeping up with style, if the no-expense-spared approach to décor is anything to go by.
Diners at Nobu can ascend to sushi atop a sweeping fan-like staircase framed by a translucent origami light that glides along the ceiling. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, via his eponymous restaurants that punctuate the globe (22 restaurants in 18 different cities), has made a name for himself as an expert creator of classically-styled Japanese menus, reinterpreted for a contemporary audience. In the Cape, he has loosened his impeccable white chefs’ jacket and opted for local seafood with some indigenous spicing. But we’re not talking hake and chips here – diners can experience the absolute luxury of baby abalone with light garlic sauce, for example, and follow this with a dessert of warm bittersweet chocolate soup, peanut butter crunch and mascarpone ice cream. Booze hounds might prefer to move directly to the bar and thrill themselves making a dent in the largest selection of sakes in Africa, plus some plum wines, Japanese beer and sochu based cocktails. Nobu is currently only open for dinner, but will open for lunch over the extended Cape summer, from September to April.
